Reading while playing is very effective with the Tornado, although it doesn't apply on every child, it's worth a try. I had this board game since I was a kid, luckily my mom was able to keep it. It's called Our Town where you spin the arrow to know how many spaces you will be moving and every time you stop at a "house" you draw a card with the same picture.
At the back of the card, there are simple instructions the child can read by themselves.
Another thing they can practice is these shapes and colors puzzle. But this can also be tricky because they can memorize the combination, best to challenge them by having them to read the words without any pictures in an index card or use a powerpoint (either in a computer or an iPad/phone).
